Medical-products manufacturer Boston Scientific will close its plant in Doral, eliminating 1,400 jobs by 2011, Miami-Dade economic development officials announced Friday afternoon. Local tech veteran Jon McGrath has been named president and chief operating officer of Neograft Technologies Inc. in Newport, R.I. McGrath served as president and CEO of LumeRx Inc. between 2005 and 2008. He stepped down in May 2008 amid a series of leadership changes at the Hingham-based startup, which had been moving to commercialize a light-based system for killing stomach bacteria. While there, McGrath completed development of a first-generation product and executed two clinical studies.

Boston Scientific Corp. said it received approvals in the United States and Europe to market its WallFlex esophageal stent. The Natick-based company (NYSE: BSX) received U.S. Food and Drug Administration and European CE Mark approvals to market the stent for the treatment of malignant esophageal obstructions caused by tumors in patients with esophageal cancer. NEW YORK (AP) — A UBS analyst said Wednesday that medical technology stocks are trading at attractive prices, and raised his ratings or price targets on nine of them. Analyst Bruce Nudell upgraded shares of medical device maker Boston Scientific Corp. and orthopedic implant maker Zimmer Holdings Inc. to "buy" from "neutral." He said stock prices throughout the sector should improve as expectations on health care reform become more concrete and less negative.
